One of the things I like about traveling is discovering new places off the beaten path so to speak. Leadville, Colorado is one of those places.  It is the highest in- cooperated town in the United States at over 10,000 feet. It has a population of 2,644 residents. Nearby is Turquoise Lake, which is the color of Turquoise, thus its name. 

Baby Doe Tabor

Tabor Opera House

Its claim to fame is the legend of Baby Doe Tabor, wife of the Famous Silver Baron Horace Tabor who built the famous Tabor Opera House. When the front doors were open a garrison of soldiers could march through shoulder to shoulder.  I had the great pleasure of getting to sing in that fabulous Opera house. The acoustics were wonderful!

Nearby are the famous silver mines, one being the mine of the Unsinkable Molly Brown.

These mines are for exploring, but are very dangerous as they are not covered over but open pits. We dropped a very large rock down one and never did hear it hit bottom! You can find a lot of old mining gear and such and the occasional unmarked grave.

There are a lot of Victorian Houses in the area and restaurants, especially the Golden Burro Café which has the largest cinnamon rolls I have ever seen.  

Camping is close by at Sugar Loafin Campground. I love the ice cream socials in the evening by the campfire. It is rustic, but a fun, friendly place to stay.

Just make sure you have you winter gear even if it is summer as it can dip into the 20's at night at the  10,000 ft. level.

We had a blast in Leadville and always try to get there when we are in that neck of the woods.


Liberty, Missouri

I love little burgs like this as they are always so fascinating to explore.  They always have the best little places to eat like Ginger Sue's breakfast and

lunch counter.   Oh the food is so good.  We find ourselves going to Liberty often when I am in Kansas City to get some of the best breakfast in the area.  Then tour around the town square for antique shopping. Jesse James and his gang hit the bank there so they turned it into a museum.

If you are in the area don't bypass Liberty, stop and sit a spell, as they say and smell the flowers or have some breakfast at Ginger Sue's.
